A conference on “Buddhism without Borders”at IBS March 18-21
The institute of Buddhist Studies, a seminary and graduate school, will host the “Buddhism without Borders: Contemporary Buddhism in the West,” Conference on March 18 to 21, 2010 at the IBS Campus at the Jodo Shinshu Center, 2140 Durant Street, Berkeley, CA.
The keynote speaker for the conference will be Professor Thomas Tweed, University of Texas, who is the author of “American Encounter with Buddhism,” and “Crossing and Dwelling,” which explores the theories of Religion. Dr. Tweed will speak on Friday, March 19 from 5 p.m. at the JSC. A reception will follow.
“The conference will explore how Buddhism outside of Asia has been shaped by diaspora and immigration? How has increase in global tourism, communication, and capitalism affected the way Buddhism is understood, taught, and practiced? These and other themes will be explored in a four day conference,” said Dr. Scott Mitchell, IBS Professor and Conference Chair.
