Kyoto, Japan- One hundred forty-six priests donning black robes and yellow kesa gathered at the Main Hall of Ryukoku University’s Omiya Campus on July 17 for the annual 2-week summer retreat known as Ango. Beginning in 1640, Hongwanji has been conducting the Ango for the past 370 years. This year, the group focused on the ‘Sutra of Contemplation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life’ which was debated on in a structured question-and-answer format. In addition, a special lecture and panel were presented on the topic of ‘Environmental Issues and Buddhism.’
