Thirty thousand join to make image of Amida
Hiroshima, Japan- Some thirty thousand six hundred photographs of temple goers with their hands in gassho were used in creating a mosaic art of Amida measuring nine by five meters (approximately four stories high) in size. The art project was on display during the Bo-san Fest 2010 (hosted by the Hiroshima young priests association) which was held at the Hiroshima Prefectural Sports Center, Green Arena (Naka-ku, Hiroshima). As the image was unveiled during the opening of the event, the arena resonated with the nembutsu and applause by those in attendance.
The event was planned to reintroduce the temple as a lively place with some activity or other always taking place. Temple members and families attending the event enjoyed the day with a special lecture, demonstration of a Buddhist-style wedding, entertainment including a performance by local artist “shodo girls,” a “fureai bo-san hiroba” table where people could casually talk with a minister, play area for children, and a food court was set-up.
