With its large Japanese community, a well-known Japanese businessman made a request in April 1992 to Hongwanji, asking that a Jodo Shinshu temple be established in Australia.  In response, Hongwanji began discussions and soon after, received approval by the Australian government in November 1992.  In January of the following year, the Buddhist Mission of Australia officially began its operation.
